At Herbert M. Hill, P.A., just about all we handle are short term disability and long term disability benefits claims. We routinely handle claims for individuals who are suffering from the catastrophic effects of chronic pain and pain medication dependence.
It is always our intent to empathize with our clients’ medical conditions and understand how they affect the client’s ability to function on a daily basis. Of course, we cannot always know precisely because we have not experienced the specific medical condition. We do our best based on years of representing clients with, it seems like, just about every medical condition.
Recently, I had an experience which has allowed to understand even better the effects of chronic pain. I suffered a serious fall just ten (10) days. Fortunately, nothing was broken- just some bad bruising. The pain has resolved from completely debilitating to the type of gnawing, chronic pain I know so many of my clients are forced to deal with on an ongoing basis. While my condition is resolving, I have experienced over the past week or so the inability to concentrate, lack of stamina and the loss of control which goes along with chronic pain. I felt compelled to write about this because I was not entirely aware of the minute by minute impact chronic pain has on one’s life. Today, I am at the end of my capacity to focus after about three (3) hours, surely not enough time to allow me to work a full time job right now. I am blessed that I work for myself and have such an excellent staff to bridge the short gap until I am fully healed.
It is my hope that this experience will allow me to be a better lawyer for all of my clients.
