Apart from physical assets, it is hard to think of anything more valuable than your ability to continue the income stream you have generated thus far in your career. Becoming disabled represents a major change in anyone’s financial plan. Often people correctly plan for this by ensuring they have an insurance policy secured either as part of a group Long Term Disability plan at work or a private Long Term Disability benefits policy.
As a result of becoming disabled, you would potentially have rights to benefits pursuant to a Long Term Disability (“LTD”) policy and Social Security Disability (“SSD”). It is important to take the necessary steps to get these benefit entitlement established as soon as possible. It is a simple truth that the wheels of justice grind very slowly and the first way to speed things up is to apply on the earliest possible date.
In addition, the two (2) benefit streams may have to be dovetailed because, especially with group policies, the amount of the Long Term Disability benefit may be reduced, at least in part, by the receipt of SSD benefits. Allow me to mention that the reverse is not true. Your receipt (or, non-receipt) of Long Term disability benefits should not have an impact, one way or the other, on your receipt of Social Security Disability benefits.
