If you are disabled and unable to work, you are welcome to sit in my chairs. We want you to be comfortable when you discuss your disability claim, but we know you would much rather be up and around than sitting in my office.
So, I have these two beautiful chairs in my office. They are there because my wife Sherrie has such a wonderful eye for quality. She found them by the side of the road. When she had them re-covered, the craftsman called and asked where she got them because they were of such special quality. I don’t know about all that, but my clients have told me over the years that they are the most comfortable chairs they have ever sat in, and I do not disagree. Almost a little too comfortable…
No One Wants To Be Disabled
I think about that when I think of my Short Term Disability and Long Term Disability clients because no one really wants to sit in those chairs, comfortable as they might be. To a person none of my clients want to be disabled. They would rather be working and pursuing the career path they chose. We all know working is healthy for us and good for us psychologically. My clients do not want to be disabled and certainly do not want to wait on payments from an insurance company that seems bent on proving that they are not disabled. The insurance companies would try to make us believe that people want to be disabled- that they would voluntarily walk away from a guaranteed 100% of their salary for the off-chance possibility that an insurance company might do what is right and pay them 60%!!
A Common Client Concern
Another concern expressed by many clients is that they know they do not appear disabled. Indeed, many will not apply for the parking pass to which they are entitled because they do not want to feel judged when they get out of their cars near the store. I see those people, and because of my clients, I always remember that it does not matter how they appear. For many people who seem healthy, a walk across a hot parking lot can be exhausting and thwart the reason for the trip to the store or, at least, preclude any enjoyment of the event.
