Symetra Life Insurance Company is a new kid on the block in the Short Term Disability Long Term Disability industry, or, at least, this company has suddenly appeared on a slew of cases coming into our office.  It is a corporation organized pursuant to the laws of the State of Washington.

It has its home office in Seattle.  Its primary claims office is located in Enfield, Connecticut.  Symetra is authorized to do business in the State of Florida.
This company is trying all the old tricks as if they thought them up.  It seems every single one of the cases coming into my office is a situation in which Short Term Disability benefits are terminated shortly before Long Term Disability benefits are to begin.  Symetra’s representatives all use the same, old, vague “not enough medical evidence” even in the face of a doctor scheduling surgery the next week.  There is apparently no effort whatever to even feign an effort to comply with the fiduciary duty to find a basis for paying benefits.
Short Term Disability benefits are denied shortly before Long Term Disability benefits are due is a blatant subterfuge to subvert administration of the Long term Disability benefits claim.  It remains truer now than ever that your best interests are never protected by any insurance company regardless of what its advertising might try to lead you to believe.  Keep in mind what Abraham Lincoln said about corporations.  When he contemplated the aggregation of wealth by corporations, he was moved to say that he “tremble[d] for the safety of my country.”  This is an unfortunate truth for those relying upon Symetra to pay the disability benefits it agreed to pay.
When handling Long Term Disability denials issued by Symetra, we are able to dig out of the hole which has been crafted and then stay ahead of the claims representative.  This is because we are paperless and they are overwhelmed by their workload.  We are able to commence responding immediately to all inquiries, thereby keeping the ball in Symetra’s court.  It is our belief that this results in favorable decisions because the claims representative know we are not going away.  We will doggedly pursue your Short Term and Long Term Disability insurance claims.
Another trick employed by Symetra is the impenetrable phone maze and never being allowed to actually call and talk to the claims representative handling your claim.  They are never available and you always wonder if those messages are, in fact, being passed on.  My clients tell me they never get a return call.  Another important issue in these claims is the documentation of the Claims File which is done by the claims representative when communications are on the phone.  This is why we almost always conduct our business in writing so it is not subject to the biased interpretation of the claims representative.
