Listening is vital for respectful communication and empathy while understanding others is more valuable than seeking to be understood. Every Long Term Disability law firm should remember that.

“…to understand rather than be understood…”

The above comes from a prayer attributed to St. Francis. It is a great prayer that sets forth laudable high standards by which we hope to live. Sometimes in the rush of life, it just seems too much. As I have meditated on this prayer over the years, I am drawn to the one thing I can do consistently – listen with intent. We here at Herbert M. Hill, P.A., have this in the back of our minds during every interaction with our clients

What Is The Purpose Of Listening?

It is necessary to identify the purpose of listening in order to listen with intent. The purpose of listening is to expand my knowledge. If I am truly listening, I am being afforded the opportunity to learn what the other person knows. This is true whether or not the information imparted is true. Sometimes it is just as important to know what the other person does not know as much as what they do know. This is especially so when dealing with opposing counsel during lawsuits.

How Listening Benefits My Clients Long Term Disability law firm

To assemble the puzzle of each case, I have to start with a clear understanding of what my client knows. This means I have to channel my listening energy into listening very carefully without any distractions, such as what I am going to say next or, perhaps, a concern that the client does not understand me.

As I allow the fullness of my client’s story to unfold, I better understand the underlying motivation and how to best go about accomplishing the client’s goals, if that can be done. Of course, the client often does not have the full story, which documents and other witnesses will flesh out.

Now, there are times when I believe my responsibilities as your attorney would require me to do my best to see that you understand a point of fact or law that impacts your case. This is always done gently and respectfully, with full opportunity to explore concerns.
