A lot has been going on in the corporate for Long Term Disability insurance companies such as Cigna, Life Insurance Company of North America (LINA), New York Life, Liberty, and Lincoln. Now, no one outside the corporate confines will ever know the real reasons underlying all the recent buying and selling of corporate assets. We can rest assured someone is making an untold fortune. We can only hope that the corporate reconfiguration will result in a more understanding and responsive manner of handling claims for benefits.
Will the corporate reconfiguration will result in a more understanding and responsive manner of handling claims for benefits?
It has not. While we at Herbert M. Hill, P.A. have been alert about these changes for our Short Term Disability and Long Term Disability clients, it seems at times the insurance companies’ representatives themselves are not quite sure who has the coverage. One large Orlando employer, Adventist Health, had Lincoln covering its Long Term Disability claims. Then, LINA, a subsidiary of Cigna, was purchased by New York Life very soon thereafter. Adventist Health is one employer which is not cooperative in its employee’s efforts to secure either Short Term Disability or Long Term Disability. It routinely refuses to produce the insurance policy governing the benefit entitlement.
During this time of corporate maneuvering, it is important to have an attorney at your side during the pendency of your claim. This can be true even in the application stage which is routinely a stressful process. It is designed to be such because this is the point at which these insurance companies want to first start their efforts to get out from under having to pay. If stress worsens your medical condition, it would be good to have legal assistance during this time. The need for lawyers is really important if, at any time, your claim is denied.
