If you are confused on whether or not you are eligible for Winter Springs Short Term Disability or Long Term Disability, we can help. Keep reading to learn the difference between the two.

Short Term Disability (STD)

Winter Springs Short Term Disability involves coverage for a percentage of an employee’s salary when they are deemed unable to work due to an illness or injury. When an employee is considered disabled under Short Term Disability, they can receive a portion of their regular wages through an insurance company or directly from their employer.

The average length of time an employee can receive disability benefits is around 9 to 52 weeks, depending on the severity of the disability and the employer’s policy. Once an employee is unable to return to work, they should immediately apply for disability benefits in order to receive coverage as soon as possible.

Coverage can kick in anywhere from 1 to 14 days after the employee is deemed unable to work. While there is typically a small gap between the time a person applies for disability benefits and when benefits are awarded. Some employees choose to use sick days while waiting for approval.

Winter Springs Short Term Disability Long Term Disability (LTD)

On the other hand, Long Term Disability coverage can pay for up to 50 to 70% of an employee’s salary. When an employee is considered ineligible to work with Long Term Disability symptoms, they can receive coverage consistently with LTD insurance.

This means an employee can receive benefits nearing five to ten years, as long as they remain disabled and often to age 65. Similarly to Short Term Disability, this is a case-by-case basis and depends on the employer’s policy.

Some Long Term Disability injuries or illnesses consist of:

  • Cancer
  • Musculoskeletal Disorders
  • Injuries From An Accident
  • Mental Health Diagnosis
  • Nervous System Disorders

Once a person applies for Long Term Disability benefits, the coverage will kick in any time between 10 and 53 weeks after the application is submitted. If, for whatever reason, you have trouble getting approved for STD or LTD, that is what we are here for!
